Newspapers shape public opinion
OkazThe biggest problem here is that we neglected our traditional media institutions. We had accumulated experiences from the 1980s and 1990s when we had strong media presence in Europe and America.THE vicious media campaign that was launched against Saudi Arabia in the past few weeks was led by the traditional Western media, including newspapers like The Washington Post and The New York Times, BBC, CNN and France24. This campaign proved that what shapes public opinion in any media war is without doubt newspapers and TV channels, and nothing else.Is this the first media campaign launched against Saudi Arabia? And is it going to be the last?No doubt this is not going to be the last. What is happening now is elevating this media war to its fullest level. This is mainly because Saudi people...

The Yemen war in Western media
The extent of the Western - especially liberal and European - media’s misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the Saudi involvement in the Yemen conflict is disheartening and baffling. To them, it looks like a war of choice not of necessity. They seem to believe that 10 Arab and Muslim countries decided one day that it was a good idea to bombard Yemeni towns and villages for no good reason. They seem to think that these countries could end hostilities anytime they wished, but somehow have continued on for three years and counting, and that the only way to stop them is to cease the sale of weapons and ammunition to the coalition leader, Saudi Arabia. They believe that if this happens, then peace will prevail the next day, and Yemenis will return to their pre-war “normal lives” and...

Iran’s ayatollahs are their own worst enemy
Many analysts maintain that the renewed US sanctions against Iran will be ineffective. The argument, even among some Trump supporters, is that the bumbling Barack Obama threw away a unique opportunity to force the ayatollahs to abandon their regional aggression as well as their development of nuclear weapons. The 2015 nuclear deal failed utterly to address Iran’s malign influence throughout the Middle East and further afield. It focused only on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and even there it failed. The ayatollahs were obliged to accept only a moratorium on their nuclear program, which they very quickly began to disregard.Obama’s removal of sanctions allowed Iran to relocate billions of dollars frozen in international accounts to countries such as Russia and China which were unlikely to...

We must separate our friends from our enemies
OkazThe true feeling of some Arab people and their governments toward the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people is revealed with each political situation or crisis. Some of these people seem to view Saudi Arabia as an enemy and it has reached the level where they have used filthy language against the Kingdom, its people and leaders. There have been many occasions when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was attacked without any reason and in a way that is not acceptable from what are supposed to be “brotherly countries”. Some countries that we have close religious and historical relations with have taken a negative stand against us.The Kingdom has extended the hand of good faith and support to these countries at times when they were facing crises. Saudi Arabia does not mention these situations...

The trust of Salah... nightmare of ‘Hamadain’
The “Hamadain” regime, which is enduring a Saudi nightmare, is dreaming day and night about “wiping out” the Kingdom. This is not a figment of the imagination but shows the actual plight of the “ungrateful” Hamad Bin Khalifa and his failed coterie as was evident from his admission in an audio leaked from his telephone conversation with Muammar Gaddafi of Libya several years ago. The following is the partial transcription of the leaked telephone conversation: “After 12 years, there won’t be a Saudi Arabia.” Several years have passed and Hamad is in a dying state with depression, spending his lean years in distress! Most observers within the Kingdom and abroad would agree that Saudi Arabia has been the victim of an ongoing smear campaign aimed at discrediting it and harming...

Why has Erdogan written a newspaper article?
OkazThe Washington Post has taken the lead in the directed media campaign regarding the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. What I mean by “directed” is that it involves news that does not search for the truth, but rather seeks to directly intensify the attack on Saudi Arabia in an unprecedented way. This is done through columns, publishing leaked news or using the issue to cast light on other matters which have nothing to do with the main case. The biggest surprise here is the interference of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who has written an opinion column about the case.As the president of a country where this crime, which has attracted international attention, took place and where officials from both countries are involved in a joint investigation, it was not wise for...

China’s Xi promises unspecified trade reforms
Almost 40 years ago Deng Xiaoping unleashed the Chinese economy under the mantra “Socialism with Chinese characteristics”. What that proved to mean was socialist central control while China surged in a few decades to become the world’s top trading nation and its second biggest economy. There is hardly a piece of modern technology that has not been made or at least contains components manufactured in China. To Beijing’s dominance in electronics is being added major engineering, solar power, automotive and aircraft production. The explosion of this nation’s productivity in such a relatively short space of time has been truly remarkable.Even allowing for China’s proven unreliability with official statistics on economic growth and output, the stunning results are there for all to...

Ending the Yemen war
OkazSaudi Arabia and its allies are not having fun in Yemen and they do not have any plans to stay in the country forever or interfere in its internal affairs.NO one wants the war in Yemen to continue forever. The military intervention in Yemen, led by Saudi Arabia, aimed at preventing the creation of the environment for a bigger war that would destroy all the neighboring countries.Imagine the condition of Yemen had the outlawed Houthi militias assumed full control of the country and succeeded in turning it into an Iranian missile base, threatening the southern Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa countries.Saudi Arabia and its allies succeeded in preventing Yemen from falling victim to a country with a theocratic government that is supported by religious clerics who think their...

When silence is shame
OkazHOW can we justify the silence on issues concerning our country from those who used to speak in the past on every matter? This would have been acceptable if such people did not speak at all in the past in the first place. How can we justify the silence of those who used to create too much noise on so many issues and participate in every debate on petty issues in the face of this ongoing vicious campaign against the Kingdom? What do we call this silence?Silence is a given right, if it is a part of person›s nature and his normal behavior. As for those who used to appear on social media defending rights and making opinions on every issue big or small, in favor or against, how can we justify their silence in front of this vicious campaign? They are hiding behind their silence.I am not...

Sri Lanka’s political crisis
Nobody knows when the Sri Lankan Parliament will reconvene to put an end to the uncertainty regarding the prime minister of the country. For a brief moment on Thursday, it appeared that the 225-member legislature would resume sessions on Monday or Wednesday. There were reports that Speaker Karu Jayasuriya had decided to summon Parliament on Wednesday, defying the president’s decision. Now we are told that Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena will keep Parliament shut until Nov. 16 in line with his initial order.Parliament was suspended by the president on Oct. 26 soon after he sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, while he was away from the capital, and hurriedly swore in Mahinda Rajapaksa, opposition leader and former president, as his replacement. The presidency remains the...
