Better disaster relief required
Ever since the 2004 Asian tsunami that killed almost a quarter of a million people in 14 countries around the Indian Ocean, governments and scientists have given considerable attention to the creation of an early warning system. The disaster 14 years ago came about when a massive subsea earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra sent a series of tidal waves up to 30 meters high surging toward coastlines hundreds of miles away. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters of modern times. But there can be no early warning for those who live in the shadow of volcanic activity. Thus hundreds have died and thousands have been injured in Sumatran and Javanese coastal towns after a further undersea volcanic movement generated another tsunami. The cause of this tragedy on Saturday was Anak...

The lack of conscience of the greedy
Al-MadinahLast week, Egyptian media carried news of the arrest of a well-known butcher in Al-Faiyum who was selling donkey meat to people. He was also supplying donkey meat to five-star hotels in Cairo claiming that it was goat meat. From Cairo we go to Morocco where police arrested a gang that was selling dog meat and the meat of dead animals. Then here in Saudi Arabia, newspapers recently published news of a supervisory committee seizing hundreds of tons of rotten meat and fish in different areas and provinces in the Kingdom, including Riyadh, Makkah, Jeddah and Al-Khobar. Of course, we are not counting the rotten products that the supervisory committee failed to find. However, although this meat is rotten, the conscience of those selling, marketing and distributing it is even more...

Jews with a conscience
Palestinians have been on the wrong end of a Zionist-fueled holocaust that has been designed to remove them from their land. Some 68 years ago, Palestinians were forcibly dispossessed of their lands often through violent means resulting in a catastrophic cycle that has led to the execution of a relentless and ongoing holocaust on the Palestinian people. In recent years, violence has been upped several notches with daylight executions in cold blood of innocent civilians by Israeli forces, especially in Gaza.It is not just the brutal aggression against the civilian population that is distressing. It is coupled with persistent humanitarian woes and humiliating measures aimed at breaking the spirit of resistance. Today, the American NGO, Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), has raised another alarm...

Protect women in the workplace
Okaz newspaperI recently read in Makkah newspaper that the Minister of Labor and Social Development has approved a charter to combat harassment at work, especially at his ministry. The charter consists of 12 articles, including banning all male and female ministry employees from meeting together in private. In cases where male and female employees must meet for work-related reasons, the door of the meeting room must be kept open. The charter also mentioned that in any meeting a proper space must be maintained between employees of the opposite gender and they must never talk about personal matters that are not related to work.I would like to thank the minister for taking this step. I believe that this charter should not be limited to the staff of the ministry, but should be applied to all...

Treatment of guest workers!
An old Saudi man went around the Riyadh Metro worksites distributing bottles of cold water to workers. I found out that he did this every day, especially during the hot summer.A worker cleaned the streets under the scorching sun in Jeddah. He typically chose intersections, near traffic lights. A young man opened his window and gave him a bottle of water. A woman handed him a sandwich. We see more acts of charity during the holy seasons, such as Ramadan and Haj. Street workers receive the most attention and help. All of that help must be appreciated. These workers probably are in need of food and water. But what I believe they really need most is cash. A man in their profession gets an average of SR 350 a month, plus a little food, poor accommodation and less than adequate medical...

The ayatollahs’ phony show trials
Throughout history, the classic resort of a failing regime has been to divert the rising anger of its people toward supposed enemies. More often than not this involves a war or the threat of war by conjuring up imaginary menaces from another state. Then, of course, there is always the option to turn on minorities such as Muslims or Jews, blaming them for hideous but nonsensical crimes. Iran has, however, rediscovered another option.Almost 40 years of rule by the economically-illiterate ayatollahs, coupled with the brazen corruption of the governing elite, have brought Iranians poverty and despair. In order to try to shift the gaze of an angry public away from its own incompetence, the regime has begun a series of high-profile corruption trials of selected individuals. The purpose of these...

An open dialogue with Prince Abdullah Bin Bandar
OkazTHE Deputy Emir of Makkah, Prince Abdullah Bin Bandar, was a guest at a special gathering with a number of opinion writers in Jeddah recently. He had a frank and candid talk with the opinion writers, who all had one common goal, which was to serve the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and participate in its development.Prince Abdullah is a young prince who emerged as a prominent public figure in a short period of time. The youth are seen as the bridge that will carry the country to the next stage where we will achieve the vision of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. I was keen on meeting with the prince to get an overview of the future based on his vision.I asked him where he would see the Kingdom in 10 years. He said he was optimistic for many reasons.Prince Abdullah’s optimism for a bright...

The language of snakes
Okaz newspaperA Saudi expert in Turkish affairs who speaks fluent Turkish told me how lucky we are that we do not understand the Turkish language. He told me that many Turkish people speak in a very degrading and disrespectful way when they are dealing with tourists from GCC and Arab countries, especially Saudis.I am not surprised at this treatment of Arabs by Persians and Turks. The two have always felt this way about Arabs throughout history. Even when they converted to Islam, they still felt that way.If ignorance of the Turkish language is a blessing for GCC, Arab and Saudi tourists when visiting Turkey, then what can we say about the so-called Arab nationalist and mercenaries who speak our language and talk against us.We have always dealt in good faith with these haters whether they...

A plan ready for rejection
The US administration is poised to unveil its long-awaited Palestinian-Israeli peace plan early next year, January or February at most. Most people do not know the details of the plan but it is reportedly ready. Seeing that Israel and the US are joined at the hip these days, it’s all but certain Israel will agree to the deal. And given the stream of measures taken by the US administration against the Palestinians, they will surely reject it.US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley gave no details of exactly what is in the unpublished plan. She recently said it was much longer, contains much more “thoughtful detail” and “recognizes that realities on the ground in the Middle East have changed in powerful and important ways”.Indeed the situation has changed, so much so that the...

A Tale of Two Cities again: London and Paris!
It was as if the famous British novelist Charles Dickens was once again back to write his masterpiece “A Tale of Two Cities” about London and Paris with the famous opening line: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Paris for the fourth consecutive week faced a storm of furious and violent protests with the government still not able to appease the street demonstrators, with many of them calling for the downfall and dismissal of French President Macron himself. In London, British Prime Minister Theresa May is facing what could be described as the toughest and most difficult challenge in the upcoming parliament vote on a British exit plan from the European Union known as Brexit. The initial signs indicate that she will not receive adequate parliamentary support, and...
