Hungarian Islamophobia
When five paintings supposedly by Nazi leader Adolf Hitler failed to sell at the Nuremberg auction this week, the main reason given was that they were probably fakes. However, there was no shame about trying to sell these pictures along with other Hitlerian memorabilia.Adolf Hitler was himself a fake, with his racist diatribes and megalomaniacal ambitions. Yet, astonishingly, the civilized, educated and urbane people of Germany, the country that gave the world Bach and Beethoven, went along with him. Tragically, the delusions of this insane little man gave birth to the hideous slaughter of as many as 85 million people. One of the Nazi’s key policies was to encourage the birth of more and more little Germans, naturally of pure Aryan birth, and to give medals and financial awards to German...

The Ifs and Buts of Bitcoin
It could be argued the only reason that crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin have been given any sort of house room by the markets is that, as a general rule, there is far too much money chasing too few attractive investments. And that word “attractive” is worth refining into its modern sense. By and large it no longer means, “safe” and “reliable” but “high return”. But with any security offering a large profit, there is also a large risk. And those who have poured fortunes into the likes of Bitcoin are discovering that such risk does not simply consist of the high volatility in the value of their computer-generated currency. A new problem has emerged which, however it is sorted, is likely to undermine this supposedly ultra-secure store of value. Bitcoins are kept in...

Keep the door open for runaway girls to return home
Al-JazirahWhat will be the fate of these girls when they discover that they have been lied to and exploited to turn them against their religion, country and society? Do we close our door before them forever?I SUGGEST that we keep our door wide open before the young Saudi girls who have escaped from the country to return home. These girls were tricked into fleeing their homeland by enemy countries. They found themselves being used as tools to defame Saudi Arabia and Saudi society. I call for opening the door for them to return home the same way we did to young Saudis who had been recruited by extremist groups.I also call for opening the door for the opposition figures to return to the country and reintegrate in society, of course after they attend rehabilitation and education programs to...

Traffic officers are not to blame
OkazA number of my friends have said that I harshly criticized traffic officers in a recent article and that I held them completely responsible for traffic jams when in fact the main reason for these jams is poor planning by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and the city municipalities. I wrote in my last article about how the opening of the Riyadh Park Mall has caused traffic congestion in the North Ring Road, which is an important road in Riyadh. The traffic congestion runs for several kilometers causing a pile-up of vehicles.I admit that I was harsh on traffic officers and turned a blind eye to the main cause of this problem, which is the fact that someone has given permission for giant malls and financial centers to be located close to one another and on the same road....

Venezuela: A new cold war!
The successive events in Venezuela are actually related to the Western conflict with China. The US imports a significant amount of Venezuela’s oil production and America will not allow China to exercise control over an important oil supplier.Venezuela, which is currently suffering from record rates of inflation, has turned to China as a source of loans. China has responded by providing loan after loan many of which are now coming due and must be repaid. Concerns are growing in Washington about the increasing Chinese influence in Venezuela and in Latin America in general. One of the reasons for the US demand to rewrite the NAFTA agreement with Mexico was that the Chinese currency had become second in circulation after the Mexican peso, which posed a threat to US economic security in a...

Unlikely foes
The fraying of relations between France and Italy is extraordinary. These are two west European countries who are neighbors, allies and - from fashion to football, tourism to culture - marquee names on the continent. The dispute is all of Italy’s making. It was Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio’s decision to show up unannounced near Paris last week for a meeting with a prominent yellow vest protester – one of the tens of thousands of demonstrators who have repeatedly sparked violence in Paris. Di Maio has been on record as calling for the military to oust French President Emmanuel Macron. This is stunning interference. As for the visit, the least the Italians could have done was notify the French government. It was a surprise even to Italy’s Foreign Ministry. Before that provocative...

Anti-BDS bill is unconstitutional
TheUS Senate has voted overwhelmingly in favor of a bill that would give states legal cover to punish companies that choose not to do business with Israel or Israeli-owned enterprises. The bill, known as S 1, thus clears its first major hurdle in Congress. But the bill is trying to muzzle criticism of Israel at the expense of the US Constitution. The bill, which passed in a 77-23 vote, says US states can “divest” from companies they disagree with on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This is in reference to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, which seeks to pressure Israel economically and politically to end its abuse of the Palestinians, and ultimately, the Israeli occupation.Interestingly, S 1 was the very first bill the new US Senate considered in 2019, exemplifying its...

The Warsaw conference and the need to support the Iranian Resistance
According to a joint statement by the US Department of State and the Republic of Poland, the Warsaw Conference will be held on February 13-14. Foreign ministers from all over the world have been invited to the conference and about 70 countries are expected to attend.Political observers believe that the timing was deliberately chosen to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the coming of Ayatollah Khomeini to power in Iran in 1979 and the overthrow of the Shah. The Iranian regime strongly criticized Poland for hosting the summit. Tehran claimed that during World War II, among the millions of refugees fleeing European countries because of the war, more than 100,000 Polish people came through the former Soviet Union to Iran and settled in the country. In another move, at the Polish film...

You can save a life
Al-JazirahRescuers in Spain took two weeks searching for two-year-old Julen Rosello who fell down a 100-meter well. They continued digging for two weeks but to no avail. Mine workers, who usually have vast experience in this field, jumped in and helped the rescuers but even their efforts did not help to rescue the toddler. Finally the lifeless body of the toddler was found. Sadness prevailed. In such incidents, especially those related to uncovered artesian wells, it can take weeks and sometimes months of searching in order to find the victim. What occurred in Spain reminds us of the tragic event in Tabuk in March 2014 that claimed the life of Lama Al-Rouqi. That proved to be challenging as the rescuers took a long time before finding Lama dead. When we look at such incidents around the...

Saudi women and weightlifting
OkazTHE number of Saudi girls practicing weightlifting has increased lately, whether at homes or in specialized gyms. This is after many years of fear and superstition in our society that practicing weightlifting will make the girls aggressive.Through personal observation and research, I discerned that those who were against the idea were not objecting to weightlifting alone but to women sports in general. These people were indeed promoting obesity. This is how women in the previous generation were raised, separated from the concept of fitness and health. These women lived under an illusion. Men who once praised them did not hesitate to marry other woman once they lost their fitness and shape and gained weight after giving births. These men had no compunction in searching for the fit and...
