Tintoretto’s bold innovations highlighted in US show
Washington — When he was just a teenager, Tintoretto was sent to Italian Renaissance painter Titian’s studio, only to be kicked out within days because the older master got jealous. Or so goes the legend. What is clear from the first major Tintoretto retrospective outside of Europe, opening Sunday at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, is that the “impetuous genius” critics reviled for his free, “unfinished” style was a bold innovator whose impact can still be felt today. The exhibition, a debut for the museum’s first woman director Kaywin Feldman, comes on the heels of city-wide celebrations and shows for the artist’s 500th birthday in his hometown of Venice.Jean-Paul Sartre called Tintoretto the “first film director,” a theatricality seen in paintings like “The...

Farmer Alexei Usikov, 31, rides his horse-pulled cart made from an old Audi 80 car in the village of Knyazhitsy, some 230 km east of Minsk. — AFP
Is it a horse? Is it a car? It's a Belarus horse-mobile
KNYAZHITSY, Belarus — Since he was a child, Alexei Usikov liked to make things. His latest invention is what he proudly calls a "horse-mobile" — a dilapidated red car pulled by a horse that he rides through the Belarusian countryside."It's more reliable than a car, it won't let you down," the 31-year-old farmer told AFP, flashing a toothless smile. Usikov lives in the tiny village of Knyazhitsy in Belarus's eastern Mogilev region. When a neighbor offered him the remains of his old Audi 80, Usikov cut up the car's frame and removed its engine. He made holes where the steering wheel was and slid reins through plastic tubes to attach them to his horse."Now it's an Audi 40, as half of it is missing," he joked. The young farmer uses his...

Man of Zeal: 'Superman Bangkok' champions voting ahead of Thai poll
BANGKOK — Dressed in a Superman suit with a red cape flowing behind him, a sweaty David Pfizenmaier jogs through Bangkok's standstill traffic and stops to unfurl a sign."If you love Thailand: Vote," it says, below the hashtag #supermanbangkok. Thais go to the polls this weekend for the first time since a coup in 2014.The 40-year-old Thai-German said Thursday he is not campaigning for a specific party, but is instead on a mission to boost turnout, especially among younger voters, "because the military government is not the solution for the long term".The March 24 poll is also the first election in eight years, and it will determine whether the generals-turned-politicians can extend their grip on power. The audience for Pfizenmaier's message is vast. There are 51...

Giant floating mouse-like sculpture arrives in HK harbor
HONG KONG — A massive inflatable floating sculpture reminiscent of Mickey Mouse was towed into Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor on Friday, as a crowd of curious locals looked on. The 37-metre (121-foot) piece called KAWS:HOLIDAY — about the length of three double-decker buses — is the work of American artist KAWS, who is known for his whimsical characters which have Xs for eyes. Tugboats towed the macabre grey figure — a character named COMPANION, floating on its back — into the harbor and stationed it off Hong Kong's busy Central district. Part of an art festival in the city, it will remain there until the end of the month. — AFP

BAALY, Norway — Europe's first underwater restaurant opens in Norway on Wednesday with more than 7,000 customers booked in to eat among the fish.Situated on the southern tip of Norway, the restaurant looks like a large concrete tube partly submerged in the North Sea. It is called Under, which also means "wonder" in Norwegian. It was designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snoehetta, which also created the Opera house in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York."The fascination is just this movement from above water to underwater through the building ...
