Drones deliver pizzas for 'Silicon Valley' promotion
SAN FRANCISCO - A fleet of drones were dispatched in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York to deliver pizzas as a promotion for HBO's "Silicon Valley". The promotion, which ties into the plot of last Sunday's season premiere, saw the drones deliver 714 total pizzas in the three cities on Monday to Twitter users who tweeted out a pizza emoji with the hashtag "#sliceline," the name of a fictional app from the show. A video captured in San Francisco shows one of the pizza deliveries being made to customers waiting outside. The customized pizza boxes bore "Silicon Valley" show branding. The promotion was executed by Fooji, a firm that specializes in promotional stunts for brands and TV shows. - Agencies

Students celebrate Drive Your Tractor to School Day
FREMONT, Mich. - The parking lot at a Michigan high school filled with farm equipment for the school's annual Drive Your Tractor to School Day. Students at Fremont High School rode their tractors to school as part of an annual tradition that began 14 years ago when a group of students conspired to hold an unofficial event. The school's parking lot was filled with at least 40 tractors before classes even began and officials said more tractors were parked outside the town's middle and elementary schools. "It's a celebration by the Fremont Public Schools of the farming community in which we live," Superintendent Ken Haggart told Mlive.com. "It gives us an opportunity to recognize the importance of farming in our community." Haggart said tractor day is...

Gator raid: Reptile found in backyard pool
SARASOTA, Fla. - Florida homeowners beware: One big gator has been found splashing in a backyard swimming pool and it took a trapper to drag it away. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office posted images of the floating gator on Twitter, saying it measured 3 meters long. With temperatures warming, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission warns that the state's estimated 1.3 million gators are becoming more active - and should be treated with "caution and respect." There've been at least two other gator sightings in yards recently, one mistaken for a burglar. Injuries from alligators are rare, but the commission urges swimming only in designated areas of rivers and lakes. As for backyard swimming pools, it makes no mention. But for some homeowners, that too...

Point Nemo, Earth's watery graveyard for spacecraft
PARIS - Chinese space scientists were not in control of their Tiangong-1 orbiting laboratory when it hurtled back to Earth and into a remote part of the Pacific Ocean on Monday. But if they had been, that's where they would have tried to make it land.By sheer fluke, anything that didn't burn up in the atmosphere is expected to have plopped down somewhere near the forlorn spot that is among the most remote places on the planet.Officially called an "oceanic pole of inaccessibility," this watery graveyard for titanium fuel tanks and other high-tech space debris is better known to space junkies as Point Nemo, in honor of Jules Verne's fictional submarine captain."Nemo" is also Latin for "no one".Point Nemo is further from land than any other dot on the...

Putin's spokesman likens Weinstein accusers to prostitutes
MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman says the sexual harassment complaints against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein were made by actresses who were effectively "prostitutes."Dmitry Peskov says "they earned hundreds of millions of dollars, and after 10 years they say that Weinstein is bad," according to Russian news reports. He says "none of them went to the police, did not say 'Weinstein raped me'. No! (they) wanted to earn $10 million."He went on to say "what's the name of a woman who slept with a man for $10 million? Far from war, Basra's cats lap it up in their own hotel
BASRA - A world away from Iraq's battlegrounds, Basra's cat-lovers have found a haven for their favorite pets. Veterinary student Ahmed Taher Maki has turned his home in the southern city into what he believes is Iraq's first cat hotel. For as little as 5,000 Iraqi dinars ($4.20) a night - or half that for long stays - the guests can enjoy beds, regular meals, health checkups and a mini playground, all under the cooling purr of an air conditioner. Maki said he was hoping to encourage more people to adopt cats in the city and give them a place to leave their pets when they are away on a trip. Taking care of animals gives people a "merciful heart," he said. "The hotel is a noble thing and unprecedented in the south of Iraq and Basra in particular." - Reuters
