Japan wins Cannes top prize after Weinstein accuser takes stage
CANNES - "Shoplifters", a heartwrenching family tale by Japanese veteran director Hirokazu Kore-eda, won the Palme d'Or top prize at the Cannes film festival Sunday, at a ceremony marked by an emotional speech from a Harvey Weinstein accuser.Spike Lee accepted the runner-up Grand Prix for "BlacKkKlansman", a searing broadside against racism with the stranger-than-fiction true story of an African-American police officer who manages to infiltrate the highest levels of the Ku Klux Klan.Jury president Cate Blanchett said the film, which explicitly links the 1970s tale and white nationalism in the Trump era, "blew us out of the cinema".But the most stunning moment of the night came when Italian star Asia Argento, who has said she was raped by Weinstein at...

Nazareno Biondo is seen working in his atelier on the outskirts of Turin, Italy.
Italian artist sculpting Fiat 500 out of marble
TURIN - A young Turin-based artist has spent months sculpting a life-size Fiat 500 car out of a 15-ton block of white Carrara marble in a work he sees as a critique of today's consumerist, throw-away society. Armed with his circular saw and a face mask to keep away the dust, Nazareno Biondo began work on the piece last year, slowly and meticulously hewing out of stone a copy of the iconic "Topolino", the original small two-door rear-engined city car that still symbolizes, 60 years after its launch, Italy's post-war economic boom. "It's my biggest work so far," the thirty-something sculptor said in his atelier on the outskirts of Turin, a city which is also home to the famous car brand. Biondo, who graduated from Turin's Albertina Academy of Fine Arts,...

6 young squirrels rescued from ordeal of tangled tails
OMAHA, Neb. - Six young squirrels whose tails were stuck together by tree sap are recovering after a Nebraska wildlife expert untangled them. A Nebraska Humane Society worker rescued the squirrels from a pine tree in Omaha last week. Nebraska Wildlife Rehab executive director Laura Stastny told the Omaha World-Herald that the sap-covered tails became knotted as the youngsters wrestled in their nest. Stastny says they are about 8 weeks old. Resident Craig Luttman spotted the rodents' predicament, describing it as "kind of like a tug of war, going in completely opposite directions." Stastny gave the squirrels a mild painkiller before removing the sticky fur and untangling them. She says some of them suffered injuries to their tails, but that she expects all six to be released...

Lebanese director tipped for Cannes glory rejects 'woman quota' win
CANNES - The Lebanese director tipped to become only the second woman ever to win the top prize at the Cannes film festival will be very annoyed if her accolade is billed as the feminist choice of a #MeToo jury."There's a risk that some people would interpret it in that way, which would be very irritating because it would have the opposite effect. Instead of honoring women they'd be saying 'You're here because you're a woman'," said Nadine Labaki.Labaki's "Capernaum" tells the story of a destitute Beirut boy who takes his parents to court for bringing him into a miserable existence. The filmmaker's third feature, which won a 15-minute standing ovation at its premiere, catapults her into the big league after "Caramel", her...

German police bring in crane to get 5 buffalo off autobahn
BERLIN - Police called in a crane to lift five fugitive water buffalo off a highway in western Germany during an operation that lasted about nine hours. News agency dpa reported that the buffalo, including two calves, escaped from a field Monday and walked onto the A3 highway near Leverkusen. The road was closed temporarily. Police said they initially corralled the animals using two trucks and several patrol cars, but weren't able to get them off the road. A zoo vet was brought in to tranquilize the animals before they were lifted. One bull that had got stuck in a crash barrier had to be freed, but was unhurt. A Cologne fire service crane removed the animals from the highway. They were taken back to their field. - AP
