The artist as an algorithm: Robot-made Rembrandt for sale
PARIS — Robots can do many of the jobs previously performed by humans, but could they ever replace artists? A team of French entrepreneurs who believe so have written a computer algorithm that can create original paintings with some resemblance to works by Old Masters such as Rembrandt. The pictures of an imagined “Baron of Belamy” and his aristocratic relations have a smudgy, blurred finish that would not have impressed Rembrandt’s clients, but are good enough for the auction house Christie’s to put one of them on sale in New York in October with a price estimate of $7,000 to $10,000. — AP “We are artists with a different type of paintbrush. Our paintbrush is an algorithm developed on a computer,” said Hugo Caselles-Dupre, a computer engineer who founded the group with...

Walk into my parlor: Greek spiders spin giant web over shore
ATHENS, Greece — It’s not quite the World Wide Web - but the spiders of Aitoliko in Greece have made a good start. Spurred into overdrive by an explosion in the populations of insects they eat, thousands of little spiders in the western Greek town have shrouded coastal trees, bushes and low vegetation in thick webs. The sticky white lines extend for a few hundred meters along the shoreline of Aitoliko, built on an artificial island in a salt lagoon near Missolonghi, 250 kilometers west of Athens. Experts told local media that the numbers of lake flies, a non-biting midge, have rocketed amid humid late summer conditions.— APSpiders, which fancy the flies, reproduced fast to take full advantage of the feast. Residents say the extensive spider webs have another benefit: Keeping down...

Judge allows Ashley Judd defamation lawsuit against Weinstein to proceed
LOS ANGELES, California — A lawsuit by actress Ashley Judd in which she accused Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of defaming her in 1998 after she refused what she said were sexual advances from him can proceed in federal court in Los Angeles, a judge ruled on Wednesday. In the civil lawsuit filed in April accused Weinstein of smearing her reputation by discouraging director Peter Jackson from casting her in his blockbuster movie franchise “The Lord of the Rings.”Phyllis Kupferstein, an attorney for Weinstein who sought to have the lawsuit dismissed, had argued at a hearing on Tuesday that the alleged defamation was barred by the statute of limitations.Judd’s attorneys argued that she had no way of knowing she had been defamed until Jackson revealed in a December 2017 interview...

Trump compliments EU’s Junkcer by calling him ‘tough, nasty’
WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump called powerful EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker “nasty” on Tuesday — but that was a compliment.“He’s tough, he’s nasty, the kind of guy I want negotiating for me,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “He’s a tough, tough cookie.”Trump’s unusual assessment of Juncker — more real estate developer style than diplomatic — was then followed by an equally Trumpian boast regarding his own, even greater negotiating smarts.Referring to US demands for renegotiated trade arrangements with the European Union, Trump said Juncker refused three times before a deal was struck in July.“I said that’s OK. We don’t have to renegotiate any longer. We are going to put a tariff on all of the millions of cars you send into...
