CANNES — Facebook said Wednesday it was reviving the pioneering MTV reality show “The Real World” as its secret weapon to lure viewers away from YouTube. The social media giant said it was also trying to harness the formidable online power of the “cute kitten” factor with a new show called “World’s Most Amazing Dog” on its new Facebook Watch platform.Users who think their pooch is cute enough to be a contender can enter audition videos from their phones, it told TV executives at MIPCOM in Cannes, the world’s top entertainment showcase. The company’s head of video Paresh Rajwat said Facebook Watch — which began to be rolled out in the US last year — was now available across the world, with “the time people spend on it increasing by 14 times since”.“The Real...

NEW YORK — One of television’s best-known families returned on Tuesday without its matriarch, as the character of feisty Roseanne Conner was killed off through an accidental opioid overdose.Comedy series “The Conners,” featuring all the main characters in the blue-collar family from “Roseanne” except for its star and creator, Roseanne Barr, had its premiere on Disney-owned channel ABC, five months after “Roseanne” was canceled following a racist tweet by Barr.Audiences had last seen Roseanne Conner hiding an opioid addiction stemming from knee pain and about to undergo long-delayed, costly surgery.“We regret that ABC chose to cancel Roseanne by killing off the Roseanne Conner character. Building a lifelong love of opera in toddlers, one hop at a time
LONDON — Two-year-old Emily is already on her way to a lifetime love of Opera. She particularly likes the hopping. Welcome to London’s Royal Opera House, where Opera Dots, a workshop for toddlers, aims to build a future fan base, one hop at a time. Beneath an elegant iron-and-glass ceiling, a group of young guests giggle on a multicolored play mat as they mimic a costumed performer singing and dancing her way through ‘Hansel and Gretel’. Some of the children do boisterous impressions of a scary witch, luring the innocent pair into her house of sweets. According to its annual reports, attendance at the Royal Opera House has fallen by 137,000 since 2013. The opera aims to turn the tide, by making the art more accessible to young people — even very young people. The course begins...

Students stuff 6,026 backpacks for Guinness record
PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia college broke a Guinness World Record by stuffing 6,026 backpacks with school supplies in just one hour. Temple University students gathered Monday night and filled the backpacks with school supplies that will go to 20 organizations, including local schools, as part of the “Pack It Up TU” event. The event broke the Guinness World Record for most backpacks filled with school supplies in one hour, which was set by Brown University when students filled 3,000 backpacks in June. Attempting Guinness records has become a homecoming tradition for Temple University students. In 2016, the school broke the record for most peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made in one hour. The 49,100 sandwiches were donated to local food banks. — Agencies

Robot’s debut in UK parliament invites ‘Maybot’ mockery
LONDON — A walking and talking robot appeared in Britain’s parliament for the first time on Tuesday, prompting Twitter users to seize the chance to heap more mockery on Theresa May. The latest round of public amusement at the expense of the British premier came during a committee hearing on artificial intelligence (AI) and “the fourth industrial revolution”. MPs on the education committee invited a robot named Pepper — a white female creation with an excruciatingly thin waist and a tablet computer stuck to her chest — to answer some basic questions. Asked whether humans would have a place in a brave new world where AI reigns supreme, Pepper responded in a reassuring voice. “Robots will have an important role to play, but we will always need the soft skills that are unique to...

Ah, the nightmares!
Saudi GazetteImagine that one night you went to bed happy, all ready for the next day. However, you find yourself awake in the middle of the night on a strange road with a car approaching. You can’t move as your body is shaking and unhinged, all you can do is scream. You scream your lungs out, and then you find yourself on your bed in your room. You are shivering and all sweaty. What do you think just happened? It’s a nightmare! You must have heard your parents telling you that. What is a nightmare? They are bad dreams which can upset and frighten the person who has the dream. It mostly plays with your fear and happens during the R.E.M (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of the sleep cycle; towards the end of the night.Bad dreams could be about a monster you saw in a movie or any other scary...

She came, she saw, she conquered, British woman claims conker crown
LONDON — Standing in a rain soaked English village, more than 200 competitors armed with horse chestnuts dangling from shoelaces faced off for the World Conker Championship. The quintessential British school playground pastime involves competitors taking it in turns to launch their conkers in a bid to break those of their opponents. Victory can also be claimed if you force your opponent’s shoelace to become knotted three times. “Being steady of hand, steady of mind and able to withstand the cold and the wet is also very important,” said competitor Mina Arsanious, who was joined in the international field by rivals from Australia and the United States. Despite her training restricted to just 20 minutes on the eve of the event, Karen Holloway, 32, from the English city of Derby was...
