CBS fires CEO Leslie Moonves and denies $120 million severance
New York — CBS Corp said on Monday it has fired Leslie Moonves for cause and has denied a $120 million severance package as it girds for a potential legal battle with its former chief executive who has been accused of sexual harassment and assault that allegedly took place before and after he joined the company. The decision to deprive Moonves of his severance follows a board of directors review of the findings of an investigation into Moonves' behavior and the CBS culture conducted by two law firms, Debevoise & Plimpton and Covington & Burling, hired by CBS. — Reuters

Metal or mariachi? Metalachi offers best of both music worlds
Los Angeles — Decked out in skin-tight leopard print spandex, his eyelids smeared with black make-up, singer Vega de la Rockha roars into a sea of raised "devil horn" hand gestures — the appreciation symbol of heavy metal music. Yet this is no ordinary metal concert. From under his silver sombrero, trumpeter El Cucuy then breaks into a mariachi melody, and Twisted Sister's classic "We're Not Gonna Take It" morphs into its Mexican folk equivalent — "No Toleraremos".This is Metalachi, the self-proclaimed first and only heavy metal mariachi band."I think we've transformed the music enough to say that we actually came up with our own genre," El Cucuy (The Bogeyman)told Reuters backstage at a recent Los Angeles concert."There's...

Ukraine’s arts enjoy surprise revival in conflict-riven east
IN a grungy cellar bar, a young crowd sings along to a melancholy ballad in Ukrainian.Nothing unusual here — except that the concert is taking place in the stronghold of Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian language has faced an unofficial ban here since war broke out between separatists and Kiev’s forces more than four years ago.“Promise me that tomorrow will come for sure,” a female vocalist sings to acoustic guitar in the city of Donetsk, the rebels’ de facto capital, with uniformed rebel supporters in the audience.Ukrainian songs are very rarely heard in this region, where Russian is more widely spoken.“In 2014, when the war had just begun, such a concert would have been impossible,” said guitar player Oleg, 20, who declined to give his full...

Tattoos still give Japan the needle as Olympics loom
Tokyo — When Mana Izumi got her first tattoo at 18, she wasn't trying to rebel or shatter any taboos -- just copy Japanese pop diva Namie Amuro's beach-bronze "surfer chick" look.In Japan, where tattoos have for centuries been demonized for their association with criminals, former porn star Izumi turns heads with her copper tan, bleach-blonde bob, and an array of designs inked across half of her body.Tattoos still provoke deep-rooted suspicion in Japan as the country prepares to host the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.People with body ink are refused entry to public swimming pools, bathing spots, beaches and often gyms, while visible body art can be harmful to job prospects.Japan has long had a prickly relationship with tattoos. In the 17th century criminals were branded as a form...
