RIYADH — Al Hilal tightened their grip on the Saudi Pro League summit after cruising to a convincing 3-0 win over Al Hazem on Thursday, extending their winning streak to 10 consecutive matches.
Midfielder Ruben Neves delivered a commanding performance, scoring once and providing an assist as Al Hilal dominated proceedings from start to finish.
The hosts controlled the tempo throughout the opening half, with Marcos Leonardo squandering several early opportunities before the breakthrough finally arrived.
In the 41st minute, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic opened the scoring, converting a precise pass from Neves to put Al Hilal firmly in control.
Al Hazem’s lone chance of the match came late in the first half, but substitute goalkeeper Mohammed Al Rubaii reacted sharply to deny the visitors and preserve his side’s advantage.
Al Hilal were again without first-choice goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who is currently representing Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Al Hilal continued their dominance after the break and doubled their lead in the 55th minute when Neves unleashed a powerful long-range strike that left the Al Hazem goalkeeper helpless.
The victory was sealed in stoppage time as substitute Darwin Nunez tapped home from close range to cap a comprehensive team performance.
The result follows Al Hilal’s 2-0 win over Damac in the previous round, a victory that first propelled them to the top of the table after Al Nassr were beaten by Al Ahli Saudi FC.
Al Hilal now lead the standings with 35 points from 13 matches, four clear of second-placed Al Nassr, who host Al Qadsiah later on Thursday. Al Hazem remain 11th on 13 points.
