JAKARTA — A 39-year-old Saudi citizen died after a jet ski he was riding overturned at Bubalu Beach in Pelabuhanratu, Sukabumi, West Java of Indonesia, on Monday, according to Indonesian local authorities. The Saudi Embassy in Jakarta confirmed that arrangements have been made to repatriate the Saudi citizen’s body.
The Saudi citizen and an Indonesian woman were riding a jet ski which capsized while attempting to return to shore in the coastal tourist destination. The Indonesian woman is in critical condition after sustaining serious injuries.
Investigations by the Sukabumi Police showed that the jet ski may have been struck by a large wave. Police in Palabuhanratu said they are investigating the cause of the accident.
Bystanders rescued the Saudi man from the sea and taken to Pelabuhanratu Regional General Hospital, where he succumbed to his serious injuries.
Witnesses said that the jet ski continued forward through high waves before a large wave struck it, violently overturning it.
An eyewitness told security officials that the impact was very strong and the male victim's head hit the jet ski before he was thrown into the water. The two riders were wearing life jackets, but were later seen floating motionless on the surface of the water.
