CAIRO — Saudi physician and researcher Ahmed bin Salem Bahammam has been named Arab Doctor of the Year 2025 by the Council of Arab Health Ministers, winning the Scientific Research and Innovation category in recognition of his pioneering contributions to sleep medicine.
Dr. Bahammam is a professor of sleep medicine and pulmonary diseases at the College of Medicine, King Saud University, and serves as director of the university’s Sleep Medicine and Research Center.
The award was granted under Council Resolution No. (3), following recommendations by advisory and award committees.
The announcement was made during the Council’s 63rd Ordinary Session held at the League of Arab States on December 18, highlighting his long-standing scientific impact and innovation in sleep and respiratory medicine.
Earlier this year, Dr. Bahammam ranked sixth globally among leading sleep medicine scientists over the past five years, according to ScholarGPS.
He founded Saudi Arabia’s first academic sleep medicine research center in 2002 and has published more than 400 peer-reviewed scientific papers. His academic contributions also include authoring around 10 specialized medical books.
Dr. Bahammam currently serves as president of the Asian Society of Sleep Medicine and holds editorial positions in several international medical journals, reinforcing his influence in shaping global research and clinical standards in the field.
