WASHINGTON — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday for talks aimed at ending nearly four years of war between Ukraine and Russia.
The meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence comes as Washington advances an updated, U.S.-brokered peace proposal that Moscow has yet to endorse. Discussions are also expected to cover possible U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine.
The talks follow a wave of heavy Russian strikes on Kyiv over the weekend, which Zelenskyy said underscored that Moscow “doesn’t want peace.”
Ukrainian authorities said a 10-hour missile and drone barrage late Friday killed two people and injured at least 32 others in the capital.
Additional Russian attacks were reported Saturday night, damaging energy and civilian infrastructure and leaving large parts of Kyiv without heating.
At the Florida meeting, Zelenskyy is expected to raise security guarantees and the issue of territorial concessions, both of which have been major sticking points in previous negotiations.
The leaders will also discuss a revised 20-point peace framework, an updated version of an earlier draft prepared by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Control of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region remains central to the talks. Russia currently controls about 75% of Donetsk and nearly all of neighboring Luhansk.
Zelenskyy has suggested the possibility of establishing a free economic zone in the region as part of a broader settlement.
The Kremlin has not responded publicly to proposals involving reciprocal troop withdrawals in eastern Ukraine. On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin was quoted by state media as saying Ukraine was “in no hurry” to resolve the conflict peacefully, warning that Russia would pursue its objectives militarily if talks fail.
Zelenskyy has expressed cautious optimism about the latest peace draft, calling it a “foundational document” for ending the war.
Trump, however, has said no agreement would be finalized without his approval, adding that he expects to review the proposal during Sunday’s meeting.
European leaders have voiced support for Ukraine ahead of the talks, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz saying Kyiv continues to have the backing of Europe and NATO allies.
Meanwhile, Russia said its air defenses intercepted and destroyed nearly 200 Ukrainian drones over several regions, including around Moscow, over the weekend. Ukraine’s military reported repelling dozens of drones overnight into Sunday, with no casualties reported. — Agencies
