LONDON — British police said Tuesday they have arrested a teenage boy on suspicion of murder following the death of a nine-year-old girl at a home in south-west England.

Officers were called to an address in the town of Weston-super-Mare on Monday evening, where paramedics were treating the girl, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect was arrested less than 10 minutes later in a nearby area and remains in custody.

Police said the incident has left the local community “distraught and shocked,” adding that officers extend their “heartfelt condolences” to the girl’s family as investigations continue. — Agencies
