WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump said the prime ministers of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to halt fighting along their border, effective later on Sunday, following days of deadly clashes that have killed at least 20 people and displaced around half a million.

Trump made the announcement after separate phone calls with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Neither leader has publicly confirmed the ceasefire.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said both sides “have agreed to CEASE all shooting effective this evening, and go back to the original Peace Accord made with me,” adding that both countries were ready for peace and continued trade with the United States.

Earlier, Charnvirakul told a news conference that a ceasefire would only be possible if Cambodia stopped firing, withdrew its troops and removed landmines he said had been planted along the border.

The latest escalation in the long-running border dispute began on July 24, when Cambodia fired rockets into Thailand, prompting Thai air strikes in response.

After several days of intense fighting, the two sides agreed to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” brokered by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Despite that agreement, tensions continued to rise, with violence spreading this week to at least six provinces in northeastern Thailand and five provinces in northern and northwestern Cambodia.

Thailand and Cambodia have disputed territorial sovereignty along their 800-kilometer border for more than a century, dating back to borders drawn during the period of French rule in Cambodia. — Agencies
