WASHINGTON — Two National Guard members are in critical condition after they were shot near the White House on Wednesday, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed.
Authorities said the suspect, who also suffered gunshot wounds during the incident, has been taken into custody and the scene has been secured.
The attack unfolded at 14:15 local time (19:15 GMT) when the gunman reportedly came around a corner, raised his firearm, and opened fire on the National Guard members. Officials said both victims were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
US President Donald Trump said the suspect was “severely wounded” and is receiving medical treatment.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey initially stated that both Guard members had died but later said he was receiving “conflicting reports” about their condition.
Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said President Trump has directed him to deploy an additional 500 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., following the attack. — Agencies
