RIYADH — Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman rejected a US proposal to join the Abraham Accords during a closed-door meeting with President Donald Trump last week, according to Axios.
The Crown Prince made clear that any normalization with Israel must be tied to a credible, irreversible and time-bound path toward a Palestinian state, a position he reiterated publicly after the meeting.
US officials told Axios that Trump entered the Nov. 18 meeting expecting progress toward Saudi–Israeli normalization following the end of the Gaza war. White House aides had informed the Crown Prince beforehand that Trump wanted movement on the file.
But when Trump pressed the Crown Prince to join the accords — a signature foreign-policy achievement of his first term — the discussion turned tense. One source described the exchange as marked by “disappointment” on the US side, adding that the Crown Prince “stood his ground.”
“MBS is a strong man,” the source said. “The door is open. But the two-state solution is the issue.”
The Crown Prince told Trump that Saudi Arabia would only move toward normalization if Israel accepted a credible, time-bound path to establishing an independent Palestinian state.
A US official told Axios that while Trump strongly hopes all Middle Eastern countries will join the Abraham Accords as part of his wider regional vision, Riyadh’s position remains consistent.
During their public remarks last week, Trump told the Crown Prince that Washington will supply Saudi Arabia with the same advanced model of the F-35 fighter jet used by Israel.
