The current visit of Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to the United States at the directive of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and at the invitation of President Donald J. Trump, comes at a moment that once again places the historic partnership under global attention.
It is the latest chapter in a relationship that has helped shape regional security, global energy markets, and the wider international order for generations.
Saudi–US relations trace their origins to 1933, when King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud granted an oil concession to California-based Standard Oil (SOCAL).
The partnership was commercial at first, but the discovery of oil in 1938 transformed it into something far more significant. Suddenly, the Kingdom held the world’s largest proven oil reserves, while the United States emerged as the world’s leading industrial power—setting the stage for cooperation built on shared strategic interests.

The Saudi-US Investment Forum held in Riyadh gathered more than 2,000 officials and highlighted more than $300 billion in investment opportunities, with the countries now pursuing $600 billion in active partnerships.

This academic exchange is part of a wider investment in human capital that aligns with Vision 2030’s goals for building a competitive, knowledge-based economy.
Across nearly a century, Saudi-US relations have proven resilient—shaped by shared interests rather than short-term circumstances. Energy security, economic partnership, and regional stability remain central pillars, but the relationship has broadened dramatically into new domains: technology, defense localization, clean energy, digital transformation, and advanced manufacturing.
The Crown Prince’s current visit to the United States comes as both nations navigate significant global changes.
