RIYADH — Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais has been appointed Secretary-General of the United Nations Specialized Agency for Tourism, becoming the first woman to lead the organization in its 50-year history. She will begin her mandate at the start of 2026.

Al Nowais brings extensive experience from the private sector, most notably as Corporate Vice President at Rotana Hotels.

She also chairs the Abu Dhabi Chamber’s Tourism Working Group and sits on the boards of the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council and Les Roches Hospitality Academy.

Addressing the General Assembly from Riyadh following her confirmation, the Secretary-General-elect described her appointment as a shared achievement.

“This is a triumph for all of us. It is a shared moment that reflects our collective vision for a stronger, more connected, and more compassionate world of tourism,” she said.

“Together, we represent the hopes of millions whose lives are touched by this sector. Together, we carry the belief that tourism, at its best, can uplift nations and unite humanity.”

Outlining her mandate, she highlighted five core priorities — responsible tourism, capacity building, technology for good, innovative financing, and smart governance — describing them as central to making the sector “more inclusive, resilient, and human.”

Al Nowais also paid tribute to the incumbent Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, commending his “vision, commitment, and role in strengthening UN Tourism’s voice and global presence.”

The appointment capped the opening day of the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly, where 160 Member States confirmed the Executive Council’s nomination made earlier in May. Over the coming days, delegates will attend four plenary sessions and several meetings of seven specialized committees.

The Assembly follows the conclusion of the 124th session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, which provided updates on the shared Programme of Work built around boosting investments, supporting innovation, and expanding education and opportunity within the sector.

Saudi Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al Khateeb congratulated Al Nowais, calling her selection a landmark for the region.

“I am pleased that the city of Riyadh is witnessing a historic moment, with the announcement of the first woman and the first Gulf national to hold the highest leadership position in the United Nations Tourism Organization. I congratulate Sister Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais,” he said.
