Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remains one of the leading causes of infant hospital admissions globally. Each year, during the peak season, hospitals experience high pressure due to the increasing number of children coming with respiratory difficulties, raising concerns for families.
Germany’s recent experience illustrates the impact of early awareness and preventive measures. By promoting community education, reinforcing hygiene practices, and encouraging early medical intervention, the country achieved an 80 percent reduction in RSV-related hospitalizations compared to the previous season. This remarkable outcome demonstrates what can be accomplished when proactive care is paired with timely awareness.
In Saudi Arabia, RSV cases typically rise sharply during the colder months. Dr Ali Hussein Almudeer, Assistant Professor and Neonatology Consultant at KSUMC, emphasises that prevention begins at home. Simple measures, such as regular hand washing, disinfecting surfaces and toys, and ensuring proper ventilation in enclosed spaces, can substantially reduce the risk of infection. He underscores that consistent family commitment to these practices is key to limiting transmission and protecting children.
Baptiste de Clarens, General Manager for the Greater Gulf, Vaccines at Sanofi, reaffirmed the company’s role as a trusted partner in public health. Sanofi collaborates closely with healthcare experts and institutions across Saudi Arabia to advance preventive measures and raise community awareness about RSV. By empowering families with knowledge and access to protective tools, Sanofi supports national efforts to ensure that every child enjoys a safe and healthy start to life.
