PARIS — French police have arrested two suspects in connection with last week’s high-profile burglary at the Louvre Museum, during which eight crown jewels valued at around €88 million ($102 million) were stolen, local media reported Sunday.
According to BFMTV, one of the suspects was apprehended late Saturday at Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle Airport while attempting to board a flight to Algeria.
The arrest was carried out by border police and the anti-banditry brigade.
A second suspect was also detained in connection with the heist, believed to have been carried out by a four-member gang that broke into the museum’s Apollon Gallery, smashed a window, and fled with the jewels.
Authorities are still searching for the two remaining suspects and the stolen pieces.
The stolen collection included a necklace and earring from the Marie-Louise collection, a necklace, earrings, and tiara from the Marie-Amélie and Hortense collections, and two brooches, a bodice bow, and a tiara from the Empress Eugénie collection.
Investigators later recovered Empress Eugénie’s crown, which the robbers abandoned near the museum — a detail that a Louvre security guard said indicated their “plan was thwarted.” — Agencies
