KHARTOUM — Sudan’s army said Saturday that its air defense systems intercepted a drone attack targeting a military base in Kenana, south of the capital Khartoum, as clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continued.
Witnesses told Sudan News that army defenses responded to the drone strike early Saturday, which targeted the Kenana military base in White Nile state. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The attack came days after the RSF launched fresh assaults on Khartoum International Airport and other key sites in the capital, just as the airport was preparing to reopen after being closed for more than two years.
The airport received its first civilian passenger flight on Wednesday.
Sudan’s army regained control of Khartoum from the RSF in March.
Separately, two Sudanese military sources told Al Jazeera that army drones destroyed a cargo aircraft early Saturday at Nyala Airport, which remains under RSF control in South Darfur state.
The RSF has not yet commented on the reported incidents.
Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war between the army and the RSF since April 2023, a conflict that has killed thousands and displaced millions across the country. — Agencies
