MAKKAH — Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of the “King Salman Gate” project, a mixed-use destination in Makkah, to be developed adjacent to the Grand Mosque.
Covering a total built-up area of 12 million square meters, the King Salman Gate aims to transform the infrastructure and urban landscape of Makkah—particularly its central area—into a global model of sustainable urban development. The project seeks to enhance services for visitors and pilgrims, enrich their spiritual and cultural journeys, and align with the objectives of the Pilgrim Experience Program under Saudi Vision 2030.
Strategically located near the Grand Mosque, the King Salman Gate will provide residential, cultural, and service facilities surrounding the holy mosque, adding capacity for around 900,000 worshippers in its indoor and outdoor prayer areas.
The development will be connected to public transport networks to facilitate access to the Grand Mosque. It combines Makkah’s rich architectural heritage with modern urban design, ensuring comfort while preserving the city’s historical and cultural identity. Approximately 19,000 square meters of heritage and cultural zones will be rehabilitated as part of the project to enhance visitors’ experiences. The project also aims to contribute to economic diversification by creating more than 300,000 jobs by 2036.
The King Salman Gate project is being developed by Rou’a Al-Haram Al-Makki Company, a Public Investment Fund (PIF) subsidiary, which leads efforts to elevate urban development standards around the Grand Mosque.
The company focuses on sustainable resource management and innovative development solutions to improve the quality of life for residents and pilgrims while adhering to global real estate and sustainability standards.
