RIYADH — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Saudi Arabia's condemnation and denunciation of the heinous attack that targeted a shelter for displaced persons in El-Fasher in Sudan. In a press statement, the ministry reiterated Saudi Arabia’s rejection of violence against civilians.
Saudi Arabia stressed the need for an immediate cessation of the war in Sudan, as well as for safeguarding of its unity and institutions, and the avoidance of further suffering and destruction for the Sudanese people.
The ministry underscored the importance of protecting civilians and implementing the commitments outlined in the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan, signed on May 11, 2023.
The Kingdom extended its sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
At least 57 people, including 22 women and 17 children, were killed when Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked a displacement shelter in the besieged city of El Fasher in North Darfur state on Thursday.
The UN humanitarian affairs office, OCHA, reported that the RSF paramilitary group reportedly opened fire on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Saudi hospital and a local mosque, where displaced families had sought refuge. The Saudi hospital “is the last functioning medical facility in the city, serving thousands of war-affected people,” the agency said in a statement on its X platform.
