MANILA — A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Mindanao region of the southern Philippines on Friday, killing at least one person and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning, local media reported.

The quake occurred at a depth of 58.1 kilometers (36 miles) off the eastern coast of Mindanao at 9:43 a.m. local time (0143 GMT), according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology initially measured the tremor at 7.6 before revising it to 7.5, and warned residents in eastern and southern coastal areas to stay alert for possible tsunami waves.

Local media outlet Inquirer reported one confirmed fatality in Mindanao, while authorities were assessing additional damage and casualties.

In Davao City, officials suspended all classes in public and private schools to allow for infrastructure safety inspections.

Meanwhile, a separate 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea early Friday, about 144 kilometers south-southeast of Lorengau in Manus province, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said. — Agencies
