Riyadh’s smart diplomacy adept in addressing regional and global crises

Jameel Altheyabi

A realistic and "fair" look at the diplomatic accomplishments, scored by Saudi Arabia under the patronage of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and the leadership of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman since 2015, proves unequivocally that Riyadh is one of the world's most influential capitals in the political, economic, cultural, and sporting realms. Saudi Arabia is scripting successes in all its capabilities, resources, capacities, and influences, as it remains the world's largest oil exporter. It has also won the bets on maintaining steady progress in the growth of its non-oil sectors and providing more sources of income that do not depend on oil addiction.

In a nutshell, it can be said that, over the past years, the Kingdom has succeeded, despite the turbulent circumstances, in further consolidating its position as a global leader, without interfering in the affairs of other countries. Despite the challenges of national development, under the Vision 2030 plans, masterminded and mastered by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia has been able to meet the quality of life requirements of its citizens in the sectors such as education, healthcare, housing, and employment, while also opening its doors to the world for tourism, sports, and entertainment.

Through all this active diplomatic activity, the Kingdom has succeeded in continuing to play its vital role regionally and globally, as well as in maintaining its geopolitical presence in a region that is virtually unstable.

The Saudi Vision 2030 has been a guiding thread for Saudi diplomacy toward resolving regional problems and mediating international conflicts, with a particular focus on partnerships, mediation, alliances, and openness to others.

The truth is that this "Saudi geopolitical" renaissance has been achieved despite the presence of severe fluctuations and challenges that many countries are unable to cope with.

The Crown Prince has been able to advance a flexible dynamic Saudi policy through remarkable diplomatic efforts amidst the crisis of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, the Israeli aggression on Lebanon and Syria, the consequences of the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, and the collapse of the Iranian plan in the region.

I believe that the secret of the success of Riyadh's diplomacy, led with great effectiveness by Prince Mohammed bin Salman, lies in building the best relations with the Arab and Islamic worlds, as well as with Western and Asian powers. This has made Saudi Arabia a key diplomatic pillar on the regional and international scene. It has thus become an influential country in a region plagued by crises and bloody conflicts, to the point that world leaders now look to Riyadh for solutions to many intractable crises.

It is imperative to say that the Saudi leadership has succeeded in leveraging the importance of its country's influence, power, and role on the regional and international arenas, generating significant resonance and response, demonstrating its ability to resolve both near and distant crises.

The successes of Saudi diplomacy were evident in Riyadh's transformation into a destination for Arab, Muslim, and Western leaders seeking solutions to the intractable crises that threaten the stability of their countries and regions. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has skillfully combined foreign policy with success in building economic partnerships and political understandings that have been instrumental in defusing the crises of the region and the world in addition to similar complexities and conflicts.

Needless to say that the goals of Saudi diplomacy are not limited to maximizing economic and political gains; rather, establishing peace and stability are its paramount pillars.

Amidst the turbulent waves around the world; Mohammed bin Salman's diplomacy has continued to strengthen Riyadh's strategic alliance with Washington, Moscow, London, Beijing, Paris, Delhi, and Islamabad, apart from building more international partnerships, and developing relations with other countries, which have ties with Riyadh. This has led to reasonable success in the Kingdom's mediation efforts between Russia and Ukraine, which resulted in a prisoner exchange between the two sides, as well as strengthening relations with Moscow, particularly the cooperation in maintaining the stability of global energy markets amidst the volatile global situations.

Saudi diplomacy has also played a significant role in addressing the Israeli war on Gaza, rejecting any attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause and displace the people of Gaza, and creating sound opportunities for reconstruction and restoration of stability in the economic and security fields in Syria.

The successes of responsible Saudi diplomacy culminated in the resounding success of the "Two-State Solution" Conference in New York last month, and the significant and key role played by Prince Mohammed bin Salman in his communications with Washington, culminating in the Arab-Islamic summit convened by US President Donald Trump in New York. This summit resulted in the announcement of Trump’s plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip and his openness to the need to grant the Palestinians their rights to establish an independent state on their historical land.

What is certain is that the unique blend of "Saudi diplomacy" has made Prince Mohammed bin Salman one of the most influential and successful leaders who changed the face of the world during the first and second decades of the third millennium. The full dimensions of this change will be revealed over the coming decades, which will witness further significant Saudi successes and achievements.
