TEL AVIV — US President Donald Trump will visit Israel “in the coming days,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog said Thursday, as Israel’s government prepares to vote on a ceasefire agreement with Hamas aimed at ending the two-year war in Gaza.
Herzog’s office confirmed in a statement that Trump is expected to arrive “amid significant progress in talks on the release of hostages.”
The exact date of his arrival has not been disclosed, but Israeli authorities have already announced heightened security measures and closures across Jerusalem, the politically sensitive city at the heart of regional tensions.
Israeli media, including public broadcaster KAN, reported that Trump’s visit would coincide with the cabinet’s vote on the ceasefire deal, a key test for his 20-point Gaza peace plan announced on Sept. 29.
The Israeli Security Cabinet convened early Thursday to decide whether to approve the first phase of the U.S.-brokered deal.
Under the initial stage, Israel would withdraw its troops to an agreed line inside Gaza and exchange prisoners with Hamas.
Trump’s broader plan envisions a permanent ceasefire, the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for roughly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the enclave.
In phase two, the plan calls for creating a new governing body in Gaza without Hamas involvement, establishing a joint Palestinian-Arab-Islamic security force, and beginning a comprehensive disarmament process of Hamas.
The proposal also outlines Arab and Islamic financing for Gaza’s reconstruction, with limited participation from the Palestinian Authority.
While the proposal has been welcomed by several Arab and Muslim nations, officials in Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey have cautioned that many key details still require negotiation before the plan can be fully implemented.
Trump’s visit, his first to the Middle East since unveiling the peace initiative, is expected to include meetings with Israeli leaders and possibly with regional mediators involved in the negotiations. — Agencies
