SIDOARJO, Indonesia — The death toll from the collapse of a school building in Indonesia’s East Java province rose to 45 on Sunday, as rescue teams continued to pull bodies from the debris of the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in the town of Sidoarjo.
The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) said that 19 additional victims were found on Sunday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 45, up from 37 earlier in the day.
Basarnas operations director Yudhi Bramantyo told reporters that rescuers have evacuated 149 people in total, including 45 dead and 104 survivors.
The number of missing persons has fallen to 18, though officials said the figure remains uncertain due to inconsistencies in the student attendance list.
Over 60 percent of the debris has been cleared, but recovery efforts have been slowed by large sections of concrete still attached to a neighboring structure.
Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for Indonesia’s National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BNPB), said 167 students were affected by the incident.
Of those, 104 have been located alive, with 14 receiving hospital treatment and 89 already discharged.
Hundreds of students, mostly teenage boys, were inside the three-story boarding school when it collapsed on Monday.
Initial reports said five students were killed and around 100 injured, but the toll has risen steadily as rescuers comb through the wreckage.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the collapse, though local officials said the building showed signs of structural weakness. — Agencies
