Six arrested after deadly Manchester synagogue attack leaves two worshippers dead

October 04, 2025

LONDON — Police in Britain were questioning six people on Saturday after a terror attack on a synagogue in Manchester left two men dead and shocked the country’s Jewish community.

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, was shot dead by police outside the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue on Thursday after he rammed a car into pedestrians, attacked them with a knife and tried to storm the building during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Congregants Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, were killed in the attack.

Police said Daulby was accidentally shot by an armed officer as he and other worshippers barricaded the synagogue doors to stop Al-Shamie from entering.

Three more men remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

Authorities said Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent, wore what appeared to be an explosives belt, later found to be fake.

He was on bail for an alleged rape case at the time of the attack but had not been charged. Detectives believe he may have been influenced by extremist Islamist ideology.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed three men and three women, aged between 18 and their 60s, were arrested in the area on suspicion of preparing and instigating acts of terrorism.

Investigators are working to determine whether Al-Shamie acted alone.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was heckled by members of the crowd, who accused the government of failing to curb antisemitism.

Despite appeals from police and officials to postpone rallies, pro-Palestinian protests went ahead in Manchester and London on Saturday.

Around 100 demonstrators gathered in Manchester, while about 1,000 rallied in London against the banning of Palestine Action, a direct-action group outlawed as a terrorist organization.
