Russian drone strike on Ukraine railway station injures at least 30, Zelensky says

October 04, 2025

KYIV — At least 30 people were injured after a Russian drone strike hit a railway station in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Shostka, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Friday.

In a post on X, Zelensky said preliminary reports indicated both train staff and passengers were at the site of the strike in the Sumy region. He shared a video showing a burning train carriage and accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians.

"The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians. This is terrorism, which the world has no right to ignore," Zelensky wrote. "Every day Russia takes people's lives. And only strength can make them stop."

According to the regional governor and Ukrainian Railways, there were two strikes, with the second attack occurring as evacuations were already under way. Emergency services were on the scene assisting the injured, officials said.

Zelensky also urged stronger action from Western allies, saying: "We've heard resolute statements from Europe and America – and it's high time to turn them all into reality."

Russia has escalated its aerial campaign against Ukraine in recent weeks, launching waves of drones and missiles in near-daily attacks. Last Sunday, a massive 12-hour assault involving hundreds of drones and nearly 50 missiles left four people dead in Kyiv and at least 70 injured.

The United States and European partners, led by President Donald Trump, have been pressing to end the war, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected repeated calls for a ceasefire. Kyiv and its allies accuse Moscow of dragging out negotiations while continuing battlefield offensives despite heavy losses. — Agencies
