NEW YORK — US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that there is a “real chance for greatness in the Middle East” following a high-level meeting with leaders from Muslim countries on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.
“All are on board for something special, first time ever. We will get it done,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
The multilateral meeting included leaders from Türkiye, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, with discussions centered on the Gaza conflict and peace efforts.
Trump presented a 21-point plan aimed at ending the Gaza war, securing the release of hostages, and rehabilitating the region under governance excluding Hamas.
He also said he would not allow Israel to annex the West Bank.
The US president is scheduled to meet separately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday to discuss the proposals.
Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed more than 66,000 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them women and children, with months of bombardment leaving the enclave uninhabitable and pushing its population into famine and disease. — Agencies
