TEHRAN — Iran announced Saturday that it has recalled its ambassadors from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom for consultations, accusing the three European powers of misusing the dispute resolution mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal.
The Foreign Ministry said the move was taken in response to what it called the “irresponsible action” of the European trio in triggering the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) snapback clause, which reinstates previously lifted UN Security Council sanctions.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday denounced the Western decision, warning that it set a “dangerous precedent” and undermined confidence in the global order.
The development came as Russia and China expressed regret after the UN Security Council rejected their draft resolution to delay the reimposition of sanctions. The US and UK defended the decision as necessary.
The E3 — Germany, France, and the UK — are among the original signatories to the 2015 accord, which limited Iran’s uranium enrichment in exchange for sanctions relief. The deal was endorsed by the UN Security Council under Resolution 2231.
Following recent US and Israeli attacks, Tehran suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, claiming the UN watchdog had shown bias against it.
On Aug. 28, the E3 invoked the snapback mechanism under Resolution 2231, triggering the return of international sanctions, which are set to be reimposed on Sept. 28. — Agencies
