KYIV — Ukrainian drones struck one of Russia’s largest oil refineries overnight, igniting a fire at the Kirishi facility in the Leningrad region, Russian officials and Ukraine’s military said Sunday.

The refinery, operated by Surgutneftegas, produces about 17.7 million metric tons of crude annually (355,000 barrels per day), ranking among Russia’s top three by output.

Explosions and a blaze were reported at the site, Ukraine’s General Staff said, posting photos of flames and smoke lighting up the night sky.

Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko said three drones were downed in the area, with debris sparking the fire.

He added that no one was injured and the blaze had been extinguished.

The strike comes amid growing gasoline shortages in Russia, where stations have run dry in some regions and officials imposed a temporary ban on gasoline exports until September 30.

The shortages follow both a seasonal rise in demand and sustained Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces shot down at least 80 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russia, Crimea, and the Sea of Azov.

The refinery had been previously targeted in March, when officials reported minor damage.

In a separate incident in the Leningrad region, a diesel locomotive was derailed near Gatchina, killing the driver after he was trapped in his cabin.

Authorities said an investigation was underway to check for sabotage.

Meanwhile, in the Oryol region near the Ukrainian border, a bomb blast along railway tracks killed three people, including a member of Russia’s National Guard, Governor Andrey Klychkov said.

The incidents came as Russians voted Sunday in local elections across 21 regions.

Election officials said they were facing “an unprecedented” wave of cyberattacks on the electronic voting system, though they insisted the integrity of the vote was not compromised. — Agencies
