Ukraine says Russian agents killed after SBU officer's assassination in Kyiv

KYIV — Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) announced on Sunday that it has killed two Russian agents suspected of assassinating a senior Ukrainian intelligence officer in broad daylight in Kyiv last week.

The suspects, a man and a woman, were tracked down in the Kyiv region and shot dead after resisting arrest, the SBU said in an official statement.

Footage released by the agency showed two bodies lying near what appeared to be a vehicle.

The suspects are believed to have gunned down Colonel Ivan Voronych, a senior SBU officer, on Thursday in a bold attack captured by surveillance cameras in the capital.

Ukrainian media outlets reported that Voronych had been involved in sensitive operations within Russian-occupied territories and had played a role in organizing last year’s surprise Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force reported a new wave of Russian drone attacks, with 60 drones launched overnight. Ukrainian defenses successfully shot down 20 drones and jammed another 20.

Ukrainian regional officials also said Russian shelling since Saturday killed four civilians and injured 13 others in the Donetsk and Kherson regions, highlighting the continued toll on the civilian population amid intensified fighting. — Agencies
