VANCOUVER — Several people were killed and others injured after a vehicle drove into crowds at the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver on Saturday night, police said.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. at the intersection of East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street. Vancouver Police confirmed that the driver, a 30-year-old Vancouver man, is in custody. Authorities said they are confident the incident was not an act of terrorism.

Police have not yet released an exact number of fatalities or injuries.

The festival, an annual event, honors Lapu Lapu, the Philippines' first national hero.

Don Davies, a member of parliament representing Vancouver Kingsway, called the attack "horrendous" in a post on X, saying he was praying for the victims and their families.

A 24-hour assistance center has been set up at the Douglas Park Community Centre to help those unable to contact loved ones. — Agencies
