RIYADH — The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has confirmed that Saudi Arabia's fig production exceeded 28,159 tons in 2023, which was sufficient to meet market needs.

The yield helped achieve 107 percent self-sufficiency, enhancing food security in accordance with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

The ministry explained that figs are a strategic fruit in Saudi Arabia, and are in great demand during harvest seasons. It noted that local production covers consumer needs while enhancing the availability of national products in the markets.

The ministry assured farmers of its continued efforts to adopt the latest agricultural technologies, such as smart farming and greenhouses, with the aim of increasing production efficiency and improving crop quality, while taking into account environmental sustainability and rationalizing water consumption, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.

The growth in local fig production reflects the success of the initiatives launched by the ministry, including programs to improve agricultural supply chains, enhance the added value of national products, and provide technical and logistical support to farmers to stimulate investment in the agricultural sector.

The ministry called on consumers to support local products, stressing that local figs are distinguished by their high quality and nutritional value, making them a preferred choice in local and international markets. It also emphasized the importance of reducing food waste and promoting a culture of sustainable consumption.
