Saudi Arabia contributes to preparing first international report on AI safety

RIYADH — The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) contributed to preparing the first international report on AI safety. The report was issued in cooperation between 30 countries around the world, the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Saudi Arabia presented a set of recommendations on digital governance policies and the balance between innovation and responsibility in developing artificial intelligence technologies, to ensure its accuracy and suitability for current and future challenges.

The report aims to assess the risks of AI and the challenges associated with the development of AI technologies globally, in addition to developing regulatory policies that ensure the development of artificial intelligence technologies in safe and responsible ways.

Saudi Arabia’s participation in preparing this report confirms its commitment to safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence in accordance with Saudi Vision 2030 and contribute to formulating global policies that support sector governance. In addition, it enhances the Kingdom's efforts to develop digital governance in cooperation with relevant international bodies.

The report discussed the most prominent issues related to the main challenges and risks facing artificial intelligence, including job loss due to automation, the environmental impact resulting from massive energy consumption, cybersecurity threats, potential hacks, in addition to the spread of deep-fakery and its impact on information and societies.

It also stressed the importance of adopting proactive measures to address these challenges and ensure that AI is developed and used in a safe and ethical manner that is in line with global standards.
