WASHINGTON — Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump revealed Friday that he had "very good" phone discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on key issues, including trade, fentanyl, and TikTok. Trump, set to return to the White House on Monday, expressed optimism about the future of U.S.-China relations.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the call as productive, emphasizing a mutual commitment to cooperation.
"I just spoke to Chairman Xi Jinping of China. The call was a very good one for both China and the U.S.A. It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together, and starting immediately," Trump wrote.
"We discussed balancing Trade, Fentanyl, TikTok, and many other subjects. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the World more peaceful and safe!"
According to a statement from Beijing's foreign ministry, Xi expressed readiness to advance bilateral relations from "a new starting point."
"President Xi pointed out that it is natural for two big countries with different national conditions to have some disagreements. The important thing is to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, and find a proper solution," the statement read.
Xi reiterated China's stance on Taiwan, calling it a matter of "sovereignty and territorial integrity" and urged the U.S. to approach the issue "with prudence."
He also described U.S.-China economic ties as "mutually beneficial and win-win," stressing the importance of avoiding confrontation and conflict.
The conversation comes at a critical juncture, with Trump inheriting a complex relationship between Washington and Beijing. Issues like trade imbalances, the fentanyl crisis, and the impending U.S. TikTok ban are key points of contention.
Trump's comments signal an openness to dialogue, while Xi's remarks highlight China's insistence on respect for its core interests, particularly on sensitive issues like Taiwan. — Agencies
