AMMAN — Jordanian police shot and killed a gunman who opened fire near the Israeli Embassy in the Rabiah neighborhood of Amman early Sunday, leaving three police officers injured, authorities reported.

The Public Security Directorate said in a statement that police pursued the gunman after he opened fire.

"He was chased and surrounded, so he started firing gunshots at the security force, which in turn applied the rules of engagement, resulting in the killing of the perpetrator,” the statement read.

The identity and motive of the gunman were not disclosed by authorities.

This incident comes amid heightened tensions following Israel’s military offensive in Gaza after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack.

Jordan, a key Western ally with a peace treaty with Israel since 1994, has seen strained relations with its neighbor amid the Gaza conflict.

Jordan hosts a significant Palestinian population, and recent weeks have witnessed repeated protests outside the Israeli Embassy in Amman, some of which have led to clashes with police.

The shooting follows a separate incident in September, when a retired Jordanian soldier, Maher al-Jazi, killed three Israelis at a border crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank before being shot dead by Israeli forces. — Agencies
