RIYADH — Prof. Chuck Yoo, a prominent computer scientist at Korea University, highlighted that artificial intelligence is disrupting job markets considerably and he promotes greener and more environmentally friendly practices in AI development.
Speaking during an interview on the GAIN Podcast, Prof. Yoo underlined the fast evolution of AI, entailing challenges as well as opportunities.
He also spoke about the high consumption of energy by AI tasks in general and particularly in training large language models; he underlined the urgent need to develop energy-efficient solutions-such as advanced power systems, including nuclear energy-capable of supporting the AI data centers without further environmental degradation.
Emphasizing job market concerns, Professor Yoo addressed how AI is foreseen to automate regular tasks, but at the same time create new roles that require creativity and collaboration with AI technologies.
"The young need to learn to live with the new environment through acquiring new abilities that allow them to survive in a new industry created by AI," he added, encouraging the next generation toward AI's promise and preparedness against its challenge.
AI use in education, Professor Yoo also mentioned, promotes developing the learning process to improve skill acquisition.
He further added that by leveraging AI thoughtfully, societies can shape a future where technology is the driver of both innovation and sustainability.
He warned against the notion of looking upon AI as a universal solution and called for striking a balance.
"AI is a powerful tool, but it's not a panacea for all challenges. We have to focus on its strengths while being aware of its limitations," he said.
With AI still redefining industries across the world, the holistic approach which Professor Yoo threw into relief-most imperatively, considerations of sustainability, ethics, and skilled workforce development-becomes highly relevant.
