Abo Noghta Castles in Tabab joins UNESCO’s Best Tourism Villages list

CARTAGENA, Colombia —
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced that the Abo Noghta Castles in the historic town of Tabab, located in the Asir region, has been included on the Best Tourism Villages of 2024 list.

The announcement was made during a ceremony held in Cartagena, Colombia, in the presence of Ahmed Al-Khateeb, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Tourism.

Al-Khateeb expressed his delight at the inclusion of the Abo Noghta Castles on the prestigious international list, emphasizing that this recognition highlights the diverse historical and cultural significance of various destinations across Saudi Arabia.

He noted that the inclusion of the castles is a testament to its rich heritage, which spans centuries, and a reflection of the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting its historical landmarks as global tourist destinations.

The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with other government entities, supported the nomination of the palace for the award, ensuring the preservation and global recognition of Saudi Arabia’s rural heritage.

During the ceremony, the Chairman of the Abo Noghta Castles, Saeed bin Saud Abo Noghta Al-Mutahimi, received a commemorative gift to mark the occasion.

The Abo Noghta Castles, located in the historic town of Tabab in Asir, is one of the most prominent historical landmarks in the region.

The Castles consists of several strongholds and structures built from local rocky stones, characterized by unique architectural designs that reflect the authentic Asiri heritage.

With white marble-trimmed windows and edges, the palace overlooks the lush Tabab Valley, offering visitors breathtaking natural views.

Tabab, a town rich in historical and cultural heritage, is home to numerous forts, palaces, and mosques dating back hundreds of years. It is a prominent cultural and tourist destination with a variety of facilities for visitors.

Located about 25 kilometers northwest of Abha at an elevation of 2,400 meters above sea level, Tabab is surrounded by well-known valleys like Wadi Tabab, Wadi Al-Maghouth, and Wadi Dabuoi, all known for their fertility and the seasonal crops they produce.

The town is also home to other significant historical sites, such as forts and palaces spread across villages like Al-Hadhen, Zeena, and Al-Ghal.
