BAKU — Azerbaijan’s ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP), led by President Ilham Aliyev, secured the most seats in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, according to initial results announced by Central Election Commission Chairman Mezahir Panahov.
YAP won 68 seats in the National Assembly, while 44 independent candidates were also elected.
Other parties, including the Civic Solidarity Party and the Justice, Law and Democracy Party, secured a few seats, with the voter turnout recorded at 37.27%.
A total of 990 candidates competed for 125 seats in the country’s seventh parliamentary election. — Agencies
