Israeli airstrike kills 100 Palestinians during fajr prayer at Gaza school

August 10, 2024

GAZA — At least 100 Palestinians were killed early Saturday when the Israeli military bombed the Al-Taba'een school in the Al-Daraj neighborhood in eastern Gaza City during the fajr (dawn) prayer.

The school, which was housing displaced residents, was targeted by Israeli military aircraft, resulting in dozens of injuries alongside the tragic loss of life. The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported the attack as part of ongoing hostilities in the region.

The Government Media Office in Gaza condemned the bombing as a “massacre,” characterizing it as part of a larger campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people.

The office’s statement placed full responsibility for the attack on the Israeli occupation forces and the US administration, calling on the international community to exert pressure on Israel to stop the violence and protect civilians.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military claimed that the school housed an “operating military headquarters” for the Palestinian group Hamas, asserting that several steps were taken to minimize civilian harm.

This attack marks the sixth school targeted by the Israeli army in Gaza City over the past week. Despite appeals from mediators, including Egypt, the US, and Qatar, to cease hostilities, Israel has continued its offensive on the Gaza Strip.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in nearly 39,700 deaths since last October, with Gaza suffering under a crippling blockade of essential supplies. Israel has been accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which has ordered an immediate halt to military operations in the southern city of Rafah, where over 1 million Palestinians had sought refuge. — Agencies
