Saudi Arabia reaffirms commitment to peace efforts in Sudan

RIYADH —
Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed El-Khereiji participated on Wednesday in the second consultative meeting on enhancing coordination of peace initiatives and efforts in Sudan held in Djibouti.

El-Khereiji delivered a speech emphasizing the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to resolve the Sudanese crisis and its openness to international initiatives aimed at achieving peace in Sudan.

El-Khereiji stated: “Since the beginning of the crisis, and based on the close partnership with the United States of America, talks began between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in (Jeddah 1), facilitated by Saudi Arabia and the United States, resulting in the Jeddah Declaration (signed on May 11, 2023) for a commitment to protect civilians and provisions stipulated therein.

“(Jeddah 2) was resumed with the participation of a joint representative of the African Union and IGAD, taking into account the Kingdom’s appreciation for the principle of African solutions, in addition to the continued close Saudi-American cooperation in urging the two parties to reach a solution to the Sudanese crisis that begins with a ceasefire and ends the existing conflict in Sudan.”

El-Khereiji reiterated the Kingdom’s commitment to restoring security and stability in Sudan and urged the Sudanese parties to prioritize wisdom and self-restraint, showing flexibility and responding to positive and humanitarian initiatives.

The meeting was attended by Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Sudan, Ali Jaafar, and Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Djibouti, Faisal Al-Qabbani.
