It is a great honor to celebrate in Jeddah the 78th National Day of the Italian Republic, a moment which represents for us the opportunity to celebrate the Italian national identity, the unity of our country, and the constitutional values that since the end of World War II have inspired us.

This important day also gives us a chance to celebrate the excellent relations between Italy and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, marking their 92nd anniversary this year. Italy was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with the newly-born Saudi state in 1932.

Political visits at the highest level and agreements signed in recent years are concrete signs of a further strategic enhancement of our relations, which have always been excellent and an extraordinary example of win-win cooperation, both public and private, strongly pushed forward by the impetus given by Vision 2030. Italy’s ambition is to play a role as a privileged partner of the Kingdom, supporting it on the path of economic diversification.

Politically, Italy and Saudi Arabia also work together on many important international issues as key actors for stability, peace, and security. As Special Envoy to the OIC, I commend the Organization for its crucial role as well as for the success of the recent Banjul Summit. While wishing all the best for the next ministerial in Cameroon, I want to highlight the importance Italy attaches to the relation and coordination with the Islamic world. On this background, let me recall, for example, a recent meeting in Rome called by the Vice Prime Minister and MFA of Italy with the Arab League and OIC states' representatives on the Gaza crisis.

On this last subject, I’d like to recall that my country, which at this moment is also holding the Presidency of the G7, is firmly supporting the ceasefire as well as the two-state solution, the fairest and most sustainable way forward, and the only one that might contribute to the stability and security of the Middle East, also taking into account the legitimate aspirations of both parties.

Italy is also at the forefront in providing humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people, lately through the “Food for Gaza” initiative, launched by Italy in cooperation with FAO, WFP, Red Cross, and Red Crescent. After the first allocation of 20 million euros, in recent days our Vice Prime Minister and MFA Tajani announced a contribution of another 30 million euros.

Concerning the recent activities of the consulate general, thanks to the new Schengen regulations, we have further sped up and simplified the procedure for issuing visas for Saudi citizens, reaching a record number of applications. Italy has also launched a new long-term Italian visa for investors.
