January 16, 2024

ROMA — AS Roma, the renowned Italian football club, announced on Tuesday the departure of their head coach, Jose Mourinho. The club confirmed the immediate effect of this decision in a statement, marking a significant shift in their management.

"AS Roma can confirm that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect," the statement outlined, signaling the end of Mourinho's tenure with the team.

Dan and Ryan Friedkin, the owners of AS Roma, expressed their gratitude towards Mourinho for his dedication and passion since joining the club. "We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club," they stated.

The Friedkins acknowledged the positive moments during Mourinho's time with Roma, including winning the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League and reaching the Europa League final in the previous season. However, they also noted the need for a change. “We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club," they remarked, extending their best wishes to Mourinho for his future endeavors.

Mourinho's journey with Roma began in May 2021. During his leadership, the club experienced some success but also faced challenges. Currently, Roma stands ninth in Italy's top-tier league, Serie A, with 29 points from 20 matches. This position is a significant distance from the league leaders, Inter Milan, who have amassed 51 points.

The 60-year-old Portuguese national, Mourinho, has a decorated coaching career. He has previously managed several high-profile clubs, including Portugal's Porto, England's Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, Italy's Inter Milan, and Spain's Real Madrid. His accolades include winning the UEFA Champions League twice, first with Porto in 2004 and then with Inter in 2010. Mourinho has also secured local titles with Porto, Chelsea, Inter, and Real Madrid, and won the 2017 UEFA Europa League trophy while at the helm of Manchester United. — Agencies
