The Pharaohs and the Suez Canal

Majed Garoub

Some time ago, two monumental events occurred in Egypt consecutively that caught the globe's attention.

The first being the huge Japanese Ever Given container ship getting stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking one of the world's most vital trade arteries.

During the incident, I did not doubt Egypt's capabilities and skills to unclog the waterway for a moment. With their intellect, they could quickly solve the problem and dislodge the ship with limited losses.

Their ingenuity is rooted in their deep history. Egypt was the protector of both Arab and Islamic nations, resisting attempts of invasion and colonialism. This has been manifested in recent history during the October 1973 War when the Egyptian military breached the Israeli Bar-Lev Line in 6 hours, a fortification that was once described as impenetrable.

These are the Egyptians that are descendants of the Pharaohs. This is Egypt.

The blockage of the Suez Canal highlights the economic, political, and security importance of straits such as Bab el-Mandeb south of the Red Sea and the importance of maritime safety and security. It will also lead to hundreds of legal suits related to maritime transport.

Such incidents will have significant legislative repercussions on the transportation insurance industry, namely maritime transport. This sets a precedent that will remain for decades to come and will have a significant impact on the conduct of insurance companies, banks, courts and lawyers in ways more than what was left by the explosion of the Beirut Port last year.

Not long after the Suez Canal incident, a parade was held in Cairo to celebrate the transfer of ancient royal mummies to a new museum. It was a wonderful artistic ceremony about modern Egypt — El Sisi's Egypt — that exhibited an excellent commitment to quality, organization, implementation, accuracy away from arbitrariness and professionalism that serves the country's art, culture and people.

This is modern Egypt under the leadership of the beloved Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, where developmental projects have begun in all sectors across the nation in housing, agriculture, tourism, health, economy, industry, culture, art, and sports.

May Allah preserve Egypt for its Muslim and Coptic people as a fortress of Arabism and a stronghold of Arab, African, and international peace.
