JEDDAH — Jeddah municipality has closed 879 food establishments and confiscated 16 ton of expired and rotten food as part of a campaign entitled “your food is a responsibility” launched by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs.

The Jeddah municipality conducted over 5,600 inspection tours around food establishments and issued warning to 1,874 establishments for violating health requirements. The inspections included touring around restaurants, cafeterias, glossary shops, pastry shops, nuts shops, butcheries and kiosks. Among the locations visited were food processing sites which operate without licenses and employ individuals without health IDs.

The violations included selling food without indicating their sources, selling rotten food, lack of hygiene, poor storing methods, absence of health IDs and not fulfilling the license requirements.

Similarly, the municipality has started its inspections lately as part of another campaign entitled “your health is a responsibility”. As part of this campaign the municipality has visited over 1,422 beauty salons and laundries. Some 160 business have been warned. The municipality now plans to inspect health establishments during the summer to ensure the safety of services provided to the public.
