THE Traffic Department has started using a network of cameras to catch drivers who use their mobile phones while driving or who fail to fasten their seat belts. A new list of traffic violations and their respective penalties has also been issued. Stiffer penalties for violations underscore the determination of authorities to crack down on drivers who flout traffic regulations.
Drivers who complain about the new penalties remind me of a popular saying: “If you don’t steal, then don’t be afraid.” In other words, instead of focusing on the repercussions of breaking the law, focus on not breaking it!
Beyond applying fines and penalties, there is a need for an integrated system that raises awareness and guarantees the smooth flow of traffic. Unfortunately, this will not be possible until all the major road projects are completed and our throughways are cleared to handle traffic and a reliable public transportation system that can contribute to relieving traffic congestion is introduced. Furthermore, better planning of road entrances and exits and creating more parking spaces near high traffic commercial establishments will give drivers less reasons to break the law.
Finally, just as there is a need to create a traffic awareness culture so that drivers respect the system and the threats to their safety are limited, there is also a need to increase awareness on the part of traffic police. Helping police carry out their duties in a professional way will make our society better and our roads safer!
