JEDDAH — Emirati artist Nasir Nasrullah is popular for experimenting with synthesizing materials, including physical objects and theorems.
His work is a direct response and reflection of his feelings toward people and places he comes across.
Nasrullah plays with new concepts and methodologies that enrich his artwork.
He collects and feels drawn to physical abstract objects that he employs in his artwork.
“I believe that my work is differentiated by the variety of the components I use, from consumer items, to buttons, paper, wood, and even small pieces of hardware. I can go as far as to say that, noticeably, my art pieces are exclusively a form of intellectual recycling of industrial, consumerist components into a work of art that uniquely stands from the norm.”
After studying at an engineering school,Nasrullah took art courses at the Emirates Fine Arts Society for few years.
He is currently the Vice President of the Emirates Fine Art Society and is an Ambassador for The UAE Board on Books for Young People (UAEBBY).
Nasrullah told Saudi Gazette: “I found myself using and playing with different mediums. One of my biggest achievements is showcasing my work this year at Sharjah Biennial, and Art Dubai.
“I also started running a publishing house that focuses more on visual art and documentary books.”
He had two solo exhibitions in 2009 and 2011, and he won the First Prize award at the Emirates Fine Art Society’s 30th Annual Exhibition in 2012. Discussing the significance of social media to art and his work, Nasrullah described how getting involved online makes his art more accessible. “Mainly, I use Instagram and Twitter. Both are like sketchbooks that are open to public. So Twitter is for writing short stories, and Instagram is to mix between texts and images.”
Nasrullah is currently working on a book called “The Sun’s Journey” which is a mix between a comic and an art book.
“And the story behind is that the sun decides to play with the earth for a day, before it returns to the sky. She has little adventure that day.”
He said that every day small stories inspire him and he plans to share his publications with audience worldwide. He said: “I am driven by the need to experiment with new concepts and methodologies, and to utilize them where they can enrich my artwork.”
